Petkeljärvi National Park
The Petkeljärvi National Park is located about 12 kilometres from Möhkö towards Ilomantsi. The picturesque ridges of Petkeljärvi are a part of a long ridge formation that reaches all the way from Lake Koitere to Russia. The ridges are not tall, but they are steep.
In the untouched forests, you can hear the whispering of the 150-year-old, thick-barked pines.
There are two marked circular nature trails in the National Park, one 6,5 kilometres and the other 3,5 kilometres in length. The trails travel through the hidden wilderness and marshes to the narrow ridges. The longer hiking trails stretch all the way to the Natura 200 conservation area next to the park.
The oldest hiking route in North Karelia, the 31-kilometre long Taitajan Taival Trail, begins from the National Park and ends at the village of Mekrijärvi.
The specialties at the park include Continuation War era battle structures, some of which have been restored.
There are several ponds and lakes in the Petkeljärvi National Park region that provide excellent surroundings for enjoying the water. Canoes and rowing boats are available for rent at the Center.
