The military historical area of Öykkösenvaara

The main subjects of Ilomantsi’s military history are the defensive battlegrounds of 1944 at Öykkösenvaara, where some of the defensive structures at the site have been restored for visitors. The Soviet offensive during the Continuation War was stopped at Öykkösenvaara in July 1944.

The Finnish Heritage Agency has defined the area as a site of significant military history in Finland. The guide centre at the battlegrounds is open to all and free for exploring.
